What Happens If I Delete All The Files In System32/windows/drivers/etc Directory?

I’m currently running VMWARE – I have backed up the files, but have deleted them from the directory.
What exactly do these files do?
And why has nothing happened?
Yes, I deleted all the files.
hosts, services, lmhosts, networks, protocol

The default hosts file has nothing in it but comments, so deleting it does nothing. Networks points to your computer – you don’t need it. Protocol is assumed to be IP. Services isn’t used.
In short, nothing will happen in most installations. If you have entries in hosts, you’ll lose them. (For instance, I can connect to http://apps – it’s a server that I have in my hosts file. The name apps points to that server’s IP address. It’s easier to remember ‘apps’.)

You need the Operating System in order to run VMWare.
