How Do I Direct Im’s To My Phone’s Sms Without The Windows Client?

I can use Y! Mobile to log into Yahoo on my phone (via the built in web browser) but unless I constantly check for new messages, there is no notification. If I use the Windows messenger client, I can “log into” my phone and send/receive IM’s as SMS messages.
I can’t find any way to get SMS messages without the Windows client…and I don’t want to reboot my FreeBSD/Linux systems into Windows or use VMWare/WINE just to start up messenger just to log into SMS. Anybody know how to do this?
