If You Installed Vmware And Get A Virus Within The Image, Can The Virus Spread Outside To The Os Level?

I want to install a VMWare XP image using VMWare Workstation under Vista OS. Then when I download something from the net, I want to scan it for viruses to insure there are no virus. If a virus does infect the VMWare XP Image, can this spread outside to the OS level that is running VMWare? I have a Virus software installed already but have ran into viruses when downloading an AVI codec. I scanned the codec and no viruses were detected but when installing the codec it made an http call to download some external files which had the viruses. If I had this contained within a VMWare XP image, all I’d have to do is delete the image without effecting my whole OS. Which goes back to my original question, can a virus effect a system outside of the VM Image?

Well…if the virtual device has access to the outside drives, it could spread. It isn’t likely, but technically possible.

It all depends on how you do it. If you create a virtual machine and if this virtual environment has a network connection to outside, it can infect other environments or even the host environment the same way a pc can infect other pcs on a network. Considering most virus propagates itself via network, yes, it is entirely possible.
Can a file contained in the virtual machine infect host or other machines without the network? No, unless you copy them or share them via filesystem copies.

tkquestion gave you a very good answer, as any virus that comes into the system from the Internet can also leave the computer over an Ethernet connection and corrupt other computers on your LAN, and then propagate back to your host machine.
The virus could also plant itself on other storage media, like second internal hard drives or external hard drives, to lay in wait for the future – waiting for a sucker-click (hey, what’s this …)

I would run a scan just to be safe. Try AVG and or Malwarebytes both work good and can be downloaded here:

I’ve had no experience with viruses jumping from virtual image, and I test viruses in Virtualbox, however it’s possible if program is unpatched.

It can only spread if you grant vmware access to a shared folder on your hardrive. Even then, it’s extremly unlikely to happen.
