How Can I Make Old Programs Work On My New Computer?

I have an old program (its actually a game; Toy Story Activity Center, if that’s relevant). I think it was released in 1995. It runs well on these older computers, and I’d like to be able to get it running on my computer now. I don’t want to have to hassle with virtual machines, especially because I do not have a copy of an older operating system. Is there a program that will “translate” or recode the game so that my current computer can run it? (I’m running Vista Home Basic).

Unless you have the source code itself, then no (also it would be illegal).
Virtual Machines are really not so bad to use, and you should be able to pick up a dirt cheap legit copy of Windows9x to run it on. Though if it uses 3D, then you’ll have trouble with it on a virtual machine.
Though does the game run in DOS? If so, you can use DOSBox, which is completely free and little messing around, and comes with everything you need to run most old games on it.

if you know the name of the pervious os it was used on, put the file on vista, right click on it, go to compatability mode, and if the os is there, select it and apply, then ok, then try to use the game. otherwise you could try to find the same game but designed for your os or for xp which can be used in compatability mode for vista.

well, i play Fallout which is an older game as well.
My friend told me to just have other things in the background to slow down your computer, so i listen to music whilst I play.
Sorry if this doesn’t help at all, Fallout works it just glitches.

Have you tried installing it on your Vista machine anyway? It might just work like that, or you might be able to get it to run by using a compatibility mode in Vista.

  5. To add to Steven Stevens answer, VirtualBox, a virtual computing program I use, is free and from what I’ve heard (haven’t updated in a while) has working 3D support these days.
