It’s a program that allow you to have virtual PCs running on your desktop. It’s like installing another operating system that runs on your current one.

VMWare has 4 basic virtual server options (remember I am simplifying per op’s request):
1- VMWare Server – free, installable on regular operating system such as Windows
2- VMWare Workstation – similar to Server, except it has more bells and whistles and is NOT free
3- VMWare ESX – This acually IS the operating system. Enterprise version, not free, advanced redundancy/performance/DR features
4- VMWare ESXi – Similar to ESX but freee, less features
