VMWare lets you run two (or more) operating systems on a single computer at the same time.
This is mainly useful for testing purposes (if the software being tested requires a different OS to the usual, could cause system instability, or said software is an OS) and running applications written for different OSes at the same time.

VMware, the company, is one of many producers of “Virtual Machine” hardware emulators.
We could write a 4 page essay, or you could read all about 1. VMware on Wikipedia. Then, 2. Features.

TIP: Any operating systems running under VM are called “Appliances”, so do your own research before you choose a VM.
