Hey–I have a laptop with windows xp–I do not want to partion or change the drive since i do not want to accidently mess things up.
I would like to however test windows 7 rc. My laptop only has a 1 gb ram so i dont want to run a virtual machine inside of xp since it will slow it down badly.
Can I use VMware player or Microsoft Virtual PC or any software like that, and configure a boot loader or a way of chosing to boot from the Virtual Hard Disk, OR the primary disk with my XP?
I checked in the bios, but it did not detect my virttual disk.
Any help will be appreciated,
Thanks,
Chris.

it’s impossible….because it’s a “virtual” hdd…….No any way can do it!
I don’t like virtual machine,I think virtual box better than that…
I suggest to get more RAM before you start. VMware or Virtual PC both run on top of your host OS.
I have 3 GB or Ram running XP pro as the host OS and VMware Window 7 as guest OS, i give it 1GB Ram,
You can also do a dual boot OS, XP and Win7. I have no problem w/ Win7 running as a guest, but not sure if all the video, sound, and Network Card drivers would be compatible w/ Window 7 or not
sorry to hurt u but there is no way to boot from the Virtual Hard Disk, OR the primary disk with your XP.
U have to use VMWare create a virtual machine in it to test Win 7
with 1 gb of ram it will be very painfully slow.
Virtual disk cannot be accessed from the BIOS. No matter what. Virtual is just that, virtual, meaning it doesn’t exist.
Virtual PC’s are software that run on top of the mainframe, hence, Windows needs to be running to run a virtual machine. So the answer is no, and it will never happen, ever.
You can however backup all your data to do a clean installation, and it’s not that difficult, and I could help. Feel free to email me directly.

You need the full 1gb to run 7, so if you are not willing to clean install, you can’t even begin to run it. It’s just a trimmed down kernel of Vista, and still needs 2006 or higher hardware.
