Not sure what version of VMWare but if you are using VI3 the traditional and best way is to create and ISO and upload this to a directory. Mount the iso and specify during VM creation that you are using a linux based Virtual Machine. You will definitely find more information on how to do this in the community forums on support.vmware.com
