		<description>Yep it will work, I have used VBox with just 1GB of RAM. All Ubuntu needs is around 380 MB virtual memory and a virtual hard drive of 4 GB that you will allocate using Virtual box settings. 
Ubuntu is the easiest if you are new to GNU/Linux, also not resource hungry like others.

		<description>I see no problems here at all, the specs. on you Laptop are more than adequate. I would recommend VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org/ as your virtual machine I use it all the time for testing variuos Linux distros.
